What this is

This archive holds Ka ʻElele: The Messenger, the journal of Bishop Museum, published for its members. It is offered as a reading and research resource. By using it you agree to these terms; if you do not, please do not use it.

The issues themselves

Ka ʻElele, its articles, photographs and artwork are the property of Bishop Museum or of the photographers, authors and institutions credited within each issue. Some material is reproduced here under permissions granted for the original publication.

You are welcome to read, search, download and print issues for personal study, scholarship, teaching and private research, and to quote briefly from them with credit. Republishing an issue or an article, redistributing it, using any part of it commercially, or using photographs separately from the page they appear on requires written permission from Bishop Museum. Systematic or automated downloading of the archive is not permitted.

Nothing here transfers ownership or grants a licence beyond what this page describes. If you are unsure, ask us — permission is often given.

Cultural materials

These issues describe Native Hawaiian and Pacific collections, places, practices and people. Some material is culturally sensitive, and some reflects the language and attitudes of the time it was written rather than the Museum’s present understanding. We ask that you treat this material with care and respect, and that you consult the Museum before using it in ways that touch on cultural protocol.

Search and answers

The archive can compose a written answer to a question from passages in the issues. Please understand what that is:

• An answer is assembled from the archive’s own text by an automated system. It is a finding aid, not a statement by Bishop Museum, and it has not been reviewed by a curator before you see it.
• Automated answers can be wrong, incomplete, or can miss the sense of a passage. Always follow the citations and read the page itself before relying on anything.
• Events, hours, prices, exhibitions and staff named in past issues were accurate when published and are very often out of date. For anything current, see bishopmuseum.org.
• Answers are not a substitute for professional, legal, financial or scholarly advice, and should not be cited as a source in their own right. Cite the issue and page.

The transcription of older issues was produced automatically and may contain errors, particularly in Hawaiian words and in names. The PDF of each issue is the authoritative text.

Fair use of the service

Please do not attempt to disrupt the archive, work around its limits, scrape it in bulk, or use it to send unlawful, abusive or misleading material. The number of questions one visitor may ask in an hour is limited so the archive stays available to everyone. We may withdraw access to anyone who abuses it.

Availability

The archive is provided as it is, without warranty of any kind. We do not promise that it will be uninterrupted, error free, or that every issue will always be present. We may add, change, withdraw or correct material at any time.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, Bishop Museum is not liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential or special loss arising from use of this archive, including reliance on an automated answer or on transcribed text. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited.

Takedown and corrections

If you hold rights in material reproduced here, if you find an error, or if you believe something should not be public, please write to us. We take such requests seriously and will review them promptly.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Hawaiʻi, and any dispute belongs in the state or federal courts sitting in Honolulu.
